Sweet Home WWTP Experiences Large Influx

Public Works Press Release Header

SWEET HOME, Ore. August 17, 2022 — On August 9, 2022, the Sweet Home Wastewater Treatment Plant experienced an increase of approximately double our usual flow of 700 gallons per minute (GPM.) For the next 3-4 hours, the influent level was at 1,400GPM. The next day we lost nearly all biological life in our aeration basin due to the unknown discharge. Sampling was conducted when the plant became odorous. Tests revealed bacteria exceedance of the permitted level of 406 MPN on e-coli. The waterway affected is immediately downstream of the Pleasant Valley boat ramp. Staff continues to monitor and take corrective measures to bring the plant back into compliance. They are working with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and our local partners.
